Industrial trip of BS Environmental Science students to Trout Hatchery at Masot, Kali Matti, Murree
Industrial Visits
- Batch: BS Environmental Science (5th Semester – Batch 2024)
- Visiting place: Trout Hatchery at Masot, Kali Matti, Murree
- Accompanying faculty members: Dr. Imran Hashmi & Ms. Mehwish Khalid
- Purpose of the trip: To understand the potential impacts of environmental pollutants on fish health and aquatic ecosystems through field observations.
- Student learning outcomes:
Undergraduate Environmental Sciences students visited the Trout Hatchery at Masot, Kali Matti, Murree as part of their Environmental Toxicology course to gain practical exposure to freshwater aquaculture, fish health, water-quality management, and environmental risk assessment. The visit enabled students to observe hatchery operations and understand how water quality and environmental contaminants can influence fish health and survival. Students explored potential toxicants such as ammonia, nitrite, pesticides, heavy metals, and other pollutants and related these hazards to toxicity, exposure pathways, bioaccumulation, and ecological effects.
The field visit provided an opportunity for students to connect theoretical knowledge of Environmental Toxicology with practical freshwater-management practices, including pollution prevention, safe chemical use, waste management, and protection of aquatic ecosystems. The activity enhanced students’ field observation, analytical, and professional skills while highlighting the importance of sustainable aquaculture, freshwater conservation, biodiversity protection, and food security. The visit contributed to SDGs 2, 3, 4, 6, 12, 14, and 15, particularly through sustainable fish production, clean water, responsible resource management, and protection of aquatic ecosystems.
