VIST to MBR Plant from NUMS

A delegation of 04 professors from the National University of Medical Sciences visited the School of Civil and Environmental Engineering (SCEE) on 24th July, 2023. The participants from SCEE were:

The participants from National University of Medical Sciences (NUMS) were:

  1. Ayesha Rauf (Asst. Dean and HoD, Department Health Professions Education)
  2. Addela Bashir (Lead coordinator, NUMS Environmental Stewardship Committee, NUMS)
  3. Hina (NUMS Environmental Stewardship Committee, NUMS)
  4. Aman Karim (Asst. Prof. NUMS Environmental Stewardship Committee, NUMS)

The delegation was given a presentation by Dr. Sher Jamal Khan on 50m3/day membrane bioreactor (MBR) wastewater treatment system operational in NUST since 2016. The delegation received detailed information about the system’s design, layout, and operational procedures. dditionally, the delegation presented their own initiative, the NUMS Environment Stewardship Committee (NESC), which aims to establish a collaborative environment alliance involving NUMS, NUST, and other representative institutions from various regions, including Punjab (Lahore University of Management Sciences – LUMS), Baluchistan (Balochistan University of Information Technology, Engineering and Management Sciences – BUITEMS), Gilgit-Baltistan (International Karakoram University), Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (Ayub Medical College), and Sindh (Aga Khan University – AKU). The main objective of this alliance is to raise environmental awareness, promote behavioral changes to enhance environmental practices, and foster research and development initiatives. During the meeting, opportunities for cooperation between the Environment Clubs and the Green Youth Movement (GYM) were explored to enhance the effectiveness of the alliance’s efforts. Furthermore, the delegation was given a live demonstration of the MBR plant and received a comprehensive briefing on the wastewater treatment process.
