Department of Environmental Sciences
Environmental Science is an interdisciplinary field that focusses on the interaction between air, soil and water and the living organisms on the earth. These four components have dynamic and interdependent relationships between one another. To develop a better understanding of natural and human environments, environmental scientists also combine perspectives, models, knowledge, and data drawn from biology, physics, chemistry, earth sciences, geography and social sciences. Department of Environmental Sciences at NUST was established in 2009. It offers post graduate programs that include MS and PhD. Fieldwork is an important component of environmental science programs, which includes visits to a variety of locations, facilities, and industries, giving students the opportunity to experience the real-world environmental challenges and develop their local solutions. You can also expect to spend a fair amount of time in the lab, learning how to carry out different types of tests and analysis and run various experimental set-ups. Areas of research being offered at the department include air pollution control, bioremediation of environmental compartments, climate change adaptation and mitigation, environmental toxicology, exploration of renewable energy resources, solid waste management and water & wastewater treatment.

Pakistan has been listed among the countries which are the most susceptible to adverse impacts of environmental issues including climate change. Various mitigation strategies to address these issues are not feasible especially in developing part of the world as their economy is dependent on industrial and agricultural practices. In such circumstances, there is dire need to go for only cost-effective methods and strategies to have efficient but sustainable use of natural resources while improving and maintaining living conditions of ever-growing population and urbanization.
