Project Description : The four-year project amounting 9.222 million euros is funded by Horizon Europe. With a consortium of 20 partners from 11 countries, including international cooperation with Turkey and Pakistan, RESURGENCE aims to create seeds for future circularity hubs, working towards a significant and lasting impact. NUST being one of the technical partners on the project is represented by Prof. Dr. Muhammad Arshad and Prof. Dr. Sher Jamal from SCEE (IESE) within this mega project. The project will focus on four case studies spread over Portugal, Turkey, Poland, and Spain, encompassing the pulp & paper, chemical, and steel sectors, and exploring synergies between urban water treatment and industrial operations. NUST team will be involved in developing technical solutions for European industrial wastewater treatment involving biological and distillation processes.
Sponsoring Agency: HEC Pakistan
Duration: 36 months
Project Description : This study aims on the assessment of antibacterial resistance in water and sediment samples from Rawal and Khanpur dam and their tributaries. Comprehensive data about ABR in bacteria, genes and their genomic context in the study area will be collected to exhibit a clear understanding of increasing risk of antibacterial resistance in the local environment. In addition, it will provide an overview of impacts of antibiotics consumption on ABR prevalence because of agriculture activities, livestock farming and aquaculture and mitigation strategies will be suggested based on the real time data for reducing ABR risk in Pakistan.
Project Description: “GastroPak” Project is a partnership between the Earlham Institute, the National University of Sciences & Technology in Islamabad, the University of Warwick, the University of Agriculture Faisalabad, Trinity College Dublin, the Institute of Developmental Sciences UK, and Cranfield University. It combines social science, molecular biology, microbial ecology, bioinformatics, epidemiology, and environmental engineering to quantify transmission routes for non-viral gastro-enteric pathogens at multiple locations in Pakistan and determine the social context influencing transmission.
Project description: NUST takes another giant leap in environmental monitoring, becoming home to Pakistan’s third AERONET (Aerosol Robotic Network) instrument. This cutting-edge network uses a network of sun/sky radiometers to track tiny particles called aerosols that can significantly impact air quality and climate. Professor Dr Fahim Khokhar from the Institute of Environmental Science & Engineering (IESE) of NUST School of Civil and Environmental Engineering (SCEE) is the leading country scientist engaged by NASA – National Aeronautics and Space Administration. The AERONET (AErosol RObotic NETwork) program is a federation of ground-based remote sensing aerosol networks established by NASA and PHOTONS (PHOtométrie pour le Traitement Opérationnel de Normalisation Satellitaire; Univ. of Lille 1, CNES, and CNRS-INSU) and is greatly expanded by networks (e.g., RIMA, AeroSpan, AEROCAN, AEROSPAIN, NEON, and CARSNET) and collaborators from national agencies, institutes, universities, individual scientists, and partners. It continuously monitors Aerosol Optical Depth (AOD), a measure of the amount of light absorbed and scattered by aerosols in the atmosphere. This data is used for analyzing trends in AOD, characterizing the optical properties of aerosols, and validating retrievals of aerosol properties from satellites
Project Description: Pandora spectrometer instrument spectroscopy is used to measure columnar amounts of trace gases in the atmosphere. These gases (O3, NO2, CH2O) absorb specific wavelengths of light from the sun in the ultraviolet-visible spectrum. Using the theoretical solar spectrum as a reference, Pandora determines trace gas amounts using differential optical absorption spectroscopy (DOAS). This principle attributes differences in spectra measured by Pandora to the presence of trace gases within the atmosphere (i.e. the difference between the theoretical solar spectrum and measured spectrum is caused by absorption of trace gas species).
The raw data collected enters a vigorous filtering and processing cycle which produces the final data product with very high accuracy. Used synonymously with other instruments, Pandora is able to validate collected data and extend the range of data collected on gases in the atmosphere. Today, Pandora instruments are distributed at over 100 locations worldwide and is a continually growing project.
